The Welsh: Cymry to Carolina
THE WELSH: CYMRY TO CAROLINA is a short, easy to read history of the Welsh who emigrated to the Carolinas in the 1700's, told through a long narrative poem blended with beautiful color photographs of the Welsh coast, the mountains of Snowdonia, and the Carolinas. It is the story of a remarkable Celtic people who fought Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Normans, and finally the English in their determination to maintain they identity and language. It begins with the terrifying Druids who led the Celtic tribes against the Romans, follows the mystical King Arthur and the Saxon invaders, explores the age of Welsh priests and princes, tells of the Welshman Henry VII who united Wales and England, and details the trouble history of this union. The narrative shifts to America of the 1700's as many dissenting Welsh risk everything to escape persecution and emigrate to the New World and the colony of Pennsylvania. From here many would move south to the Carolina wilderness in search of a better life where they joined Scots-Irish, Germans, and others who would join in the fight for American independence. These are our ancestors. If you trace your family to the Piedmont of the Carolinas, this is your story, your thread in the great tapestry that is America. It is a book filled with historical maps, beautiful photographs and montages by the author, and heroic characters whose genes we carry within us. This is a collector's item, a family treasure, a book to be passed on to the next generation and includes charts in the back for your own family tree. The author is an emeritus professor of Wingate University in North Carolina who has traveled extensively in the British Isles including Wales. The book is dedicated to his Davis grandparents, fourth generation descendants of Welsh settlers in the Carolinas. the
